Your cat's health will reflect the quality of the diet fed.

The feed your cat consumes mirrors the state of health your cat is in. Cats are obligate carnivores. This means they must eat meat. Animal proteins contain a complete amino acid profile, plant based proteins do not. Amino acids are the building blocks of life and cats need more of them than some of our other furry friends. While dogs have the ability to tolerate a wider variety of feeds and fillers, cats will suffer declining health as a result if such fillers comprise the bulk of their diets; their short digestive tracts and lack of enzymes to break down such matter contributes too many diseases now seen in our feline friends.

The Trouble with Most Commercial Cat Foods

Many commercial cat foods are high in carbohydrates as they are cheap filler. Since cats are not designed by nature to process carbohydrates well, grain fillers can contribute to issues like diabetes. Soy is another ingredient in some cat foods, which is of no use to your cat. Compounds in soy may interfere with thyroid function in some cats. Felines, in increasing numbers are suffering from diabetes and obesity; many in holistic health see a correlation between difficult to digest ingredients and these diseases.

Another consideration to take into account is that cats allowed to catch prey will get a good deal of moisture from their prey. Many feel that feeding solely a dry diet will contribute to problems of the urinary tract as cats do not drink water, as often, as say a dog would.

While many feel their pet fares well on a dry diet, the cumulative effect generally results in declining health as the pet ages. Many commercial diets have less than savory ingredients that add to the domino effect of failing vitality. Feeding a diet that contains moistened food as well as little or no carbohydrates, will greatly aid the health of the feline urinary tract.

Options to Consider that will Enhance Your Cats Health

Dr. Francis Pottenger Jr. conducted a 10 year study from 1932 – 1942 in which he was able to restore laboratory cats in poor health back to wholeness. This research became the blueprint back to vitality for many beings.

Many are switching to quality canned, holistic diets or raw diets and finding their pet’s reviving to a new state of health depending on the vital force and constitution of the pet.

An important item to note is that when cats are fed canned or raw food with higher moisture content, it will have the benefit of flushing the cat’s urinary system which will increase the urine output. This in and of itself will help support kidney and bladder function by clearing toxins from the cats system.

If your cat is an indoor cat, please make sure and keep the litter box cleaned daily. Most cats are quite tidy and fussy about cleanliness. Some cats may soil inappropriate areas of the home if they deem their litter box “full”. At other times, this is a sign of faltering health in the organs of elimination. Please check with your pets’ health care professionals if in doubt.

If feeding a raw diet or mixing your own cat food and the cat is diabetic please make sure to switch the cat to the new diet slowly and with very frequent trips (every few days) to your vet as insulin levels will need to be adjusted as the cat is eating a healthier diet. Failure to properly monitor your cat during this transition can result in too much insulin in your cats system, this can have serious consequences. Most cats will need a reduced amount of insulin as the transition to a more healthful diet is made.
